So was just trying to start my mini and wouldnt work, so tried bump starting it to no avail.

Got a bloke to help jump it coz the battery was flat and it got to a point where it stopped turning over, looked at the battery and it was smoking and the jump leads were real hot. Just pushed it back to my house in coventry and it just clicks when you go to start it. The starter motor was warmish now as well.

Any help/ideas would be great as I needed it badley for about 5pm today :/

Thanks!

Check the battery cable hasn't shorted to earth anywhere is always a good start, sounds like it may have done.

As above, check the main battery cable. In the area near the front subframe it can melt against the exhaust and short out.
Disconnect the battery first job.

okay managed to get the car started and narrowed it down to the starter motor. Put jump leads onto the battery from a friends corsa and left it to charge the battery for a bit, bump started her and shes alive again, put multi meter across terminals and its charging.

Just about to turn it off and start it again so will let you guys know.

thanks for comments and suggestions so far guys :)

Wont start again on its own - so it must be the starter motor.

Does anyone know where I cna get a replacement in the coventry, warwick or birmingham area?

Thakns guys!

Don't think it's the starter...

If it started with jump leads on but not without it sounds like a battery issue.

Check the voltage of the battery with nothing connected to it. It should be around 12v dc. If its lower than 10 it's dead. You can revive a battery by pulse charging but you need a charger with that facility - lidl sell them cheaply.

If the battery is ok and it just clicks? It might be the solenoid on the starter - cheap and easy to fix.

the car started when we bump started, but not when jumping it.

We got it to fire once after hitting hte starter with a hammer but it wont do it again and the battery seems to loose charge quite fast.

Just got it on all 4 in the air and the battery cable isn't melted. Just gonna take starter off and see if we can get it to fire on my friends car battery.

Have you checked the whole length of the main battery cable? Mine had shorted a bit further back than the front sub frame due to my exhaust banging into it.

take the battery cable off at both ends, then any end you like put your multimeter on the end of the cable to any of the cars bodywork and it shouldn't read anything, if it comes up 0.00 or a number then you have a short between body and cable, you can't always tell visually.

Actually a fully charged 12V car battery should be 12.6 V. 12.4 would be 75% charged and 11.8V dead flat.

So if your battery only measures 12V then it's prety fooked.

Got it fixed, turned out that for some reason jump starting it made the car send the power to my head unit (which I stupidly wired in with a sub wire) took out the fuse and it fired up first time. My house mates have now re-wired it for me and its working fine.

Thanks for all the comments and support guys :) really appreciate it
