So when i rebuild my mini engine is it worth buying a paper gasket set or can I just use RTV only on the joins? Most modern engines use sealant but do the inaccuracies of the old mini engines mean paper gaskets are more suitable for taking up slack?

Use both.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

there are a number of gaskets that 'set' pre loads and end plays and what nots, i would use a good gasket set with a smear of rtv

yep both, except for the diff on later box's that are machined wthout the gasket tolerance.

I rate loctite 574,

no sealant on the transfer housing. I prefer the idler tolerance to be good, which is hard enough to get with the cheep paper gaskets around at the moment...

Hylomar and gaskets. And like apbellamy said not on the transfer housing gasket, that one fit dry.

Also paint the engine after you build it, painted joints and all.

I've always used a very slight skim of sealant on the transfere case.

Joints that need to be paper: oil filter housing, thermostate housing and water pump. Without they leak like a soviet pipeline... Don't ask me how I know it *happy* And if you're there, there's not much left that doesn't need a gasket.

Buy, smear, fit - forgett. :) Not worth to try without gaskets.

I don't put sealant on the box to block joins as it will enlarge the gap and effect the spacing between the primary gear and idler. Just a very light smear of grease to keep the gasket in place while you are dropping one onto the other.
