Hello,
This question has probably been asked a bunch of times already, but I couldn't find much on the search.

I've replaced my 1275cc engine with a 998cc engine.

The 1275 has a is pre-engaged starter motor and the wiring loom is for that, the 998 uses an inertia starter motor with those small external-type solenoids on the inner wing.

The wiring is not same and I need help please ?
What do I do with the wiring to get the inertia starter motor running with the pre-engaged starter motor wiring please ?

Can anyone advise me on where wires need to go, I don't know much about wiring. and if anyone has any pictures to show will b great.

Thanks

Any help will be appreciated.

Pre engaged has the solenoid on it...inertia has a seperate solenoid, normally on the inner wing.

I agree. Swap the flywheels and starters, simples.

leeds/wakefield.

what io did in the past was to loop the main feed back tp the big spade connecter on the selonoid, you can use a piece of smaller wire but it worked fine for years,

what this does is engage the selonoid and motor together

Could you please explain this to me ?
How did you do this ?

I dont have a solenoid fitted to the inner wing and the starter I'm using is a inertia.
Are you saying I should fit a seperate solenoid ?

Thanks

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

If you go down this route you will need a seperate wing mounted (high current) solenoid. Best stick with the one Leyland originally used for the inertia starter.

But is anything else different ???

For example if the car is wired for a pre-engaged 1275 (later models) they mostly had electronic ignition, I'm not sure if any of the 998s did...... That would require another wiring change.

Even if both are points ignition are they both plain or ballast ignition, again the wiring is different and there are two different solenoids available because of this.

Once you have the answers, the retro-fit of a wing solenoid is quite easy but it does depend on the above questions.

John, that link is the other way around, converting inertia to pre-engaged.....
Bodge Job wants to convert backwards :)

Buy a solenoid and bolt it to the front subframe, all the original wiring is then within reach of the solenoid. You'll then need a flying lead onto the starter.
The large spade terminal from the pre engaged goes onto the small spade connector on the new solenoid. The 12v coil feed (if fitted) also goes onto a small spade terminal (i think, you'll have to double check this as i can't remember)
Then the main battery cable etc goes on the one side of the solenoid as it all came off.
If you google pre engaged to inertia on google and look in the pictures, there's a photo of the 2 solenoids with labels. If you need any more help just ask :)

Have a look on this thread at where my solenoid is http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=486617

Also make sure you have a good earth from car to subframe if you place it there.

Found something that will help
