So my 1992 mini sprite ran a carb from the factory and no catalytic converter. Often when I've been for an MOT i've had to convince the tester that it doesn't need to have a cat and that it can be tested under the pre 1992 (easy) emissions test.
However, once i put the planned fuel injection and turbo onto it, I can imagine that convincing any tester is going to get a bit more difficult. Is there a way i can get a note added to the log book or something similar to say it was cat test exempt?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Some cars have an exception until around 94 or 95 as that model was never fitted with fuel injection/catalytic convertor.

But the generic rule is September 1992 onwards. Emissions tests are based on whichever is older, the car or the engine.
As a Metro Turbo engine is early-mid 80's you should have no problems.

But the simple fact your car never had a cat from the factory is sufficient that you do not need one, so the basic 3.5% CO and 1200ppm will apply.

Ah, thanks. So... following your guide, they would do a CAT test. It would fail (because i have no cat) then they would look to my vin number, this has the last 6 digits less than the quoted 059822 ergo they would carry out a non-CAT test and i would/ should pass.

Is that correct? I have assumed VIN number from phrase "Engine Code X Serial No 059822" because my last 6 digits of my VIN are in that format. If they look to the engine serial I may run into problems as I plan on putting in an MPi lump.

Im using an mpi block. machining 0.030" of the deck nicely takes care of the stamped engine number. Yes Mr mot tester, its a converted maestro block....

Yes i need to edit that topic a little, it does go off the vin number.

There is definitely a list of exceptions somewhere though, the topic has come up on other forums.
Despite the 1992 rule, not all cars were equipped with cats from 1992 and it wasnt until around 1994 or 1995 that every single car had them
But no idea which models.

But that flowchart from the MOT above does state if they cannot find an exact match for your vehicle, they must do a basic test. So if the engine is clearly not original, they cant force a cat test as it wouldnt be an exact match to their system

Or if you stamped an old metro turbo engine number onto it, that would again throw you back to a basic test.

Do you reckon that approach will work on iVA?

I don't think it would matter. You are testing as a new car so would probably have to pass new car emissions. Bet to read the IVA guide.

You would have to proove the age of the engine.

The real question is how do you prove the age of the engine to a level acceptable by the testing authority?

Make up a fake letter with a Rover/MG/Leyland etc etc letterhead saying engine no 123456 is really really old.
