That is fantastic. You could get some amazing camshaft profiles that aren't currently possible due to the amount of jerk created. I especially like the concept of storing air during engine braking and using it to drive the engine at a later time.

Clever shit!

Even with a hybrid cars this tech can be used on the engines used to charge the batteries.

That's quite interesting. F1 cars still use cams as it's in the regs.

I alwaus liked the rotary valve idea. But they've never really been developed. I think they reached a dead end with sealing them.

We were working with hydraulically actuated valves 20 years ago at Lotus! Apart from a single cylinder test engine, they had an Excel running around with them fitted.

You can, quite literally, get the valve to follow the piston down the bore and visa versa, maximising volumetric efficiency.

Also you can, in theory, do away with any butterflies in the throttle bodies and 'throttle' the engine by varying the valve lift.

The biggest issue was the hydraulic valving. Moving fluid around that fast generated a lot of heat. And, of course, you need to run a hydraulic pump from the engine to run the valves. Despite this, the net gain was quite impressive.

Given air is more compressible than hydraulic oil, I'd suggest this pneumatic system will be less accurate than the hydraulic one. However, it looks far more likely to become suitable for production.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

I had a copy of an ancient car mechanics magazine from the '70s that had an article on a cam-less engine. I will also say the Koenigsegg series on the Drive channel is brilliant, Christian seems a really smart but down to earth guy.
