Hey chaps.
a quick non-mini question.

My golf is a 1.8 8v turbo. (Running a T3)

Now, when I bought it i was told it was pushing just over 1 bar of boost. This was apparently set up on a rolling road, so the map was perfect. I had no boost gauge, so took his word. It certainly felt quick!

Now I've had some work done, and we had some trouble with the turbo - it overheated and warped the exhaust manifold! - ouch. Anyway, it's all back together, and i've fitted a boost gauge. It _never_ goes above 11psi.
The boost shoots upto 11psi @ 3500rpm, and stays there till 4500, then drops to 9-10psi until the limiter

I've played with the bleed valve - and the max the car boosts to is 11. I've even removed the screw all together, and it still didnt go above 11. when i screwed it in (to make sure it was making a difference) it went down to 4psi.

So, what could cause my car to only boost to 11psi.

and should the boost drop off at high end revs?

Thanks..

al.

Turbine housing cracked? This is what i found when i pulled my T2 apart - no wonder it wouldn't go above 16psi!
Also consider that at lower boost, it's still dumping a lot of potential energy, so isn't running efficiently...

If your manifold got that hot - I suspect this could also have happened.

EGT sensors will set alarm bells ringing before damage is done next time...

Could be - Can't see the turbo really as the head/inlet manifold is in the way...

Hi,
Could be the actuator spring has gone weak, due to the overheating?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

aha. :)

Tbh, the turbo sounds awesome, spools up well, and everything else, so i dont think its the turbo at fault.. I'll get an actuator on there and see if that helps. the car's not slow with 10psi, so im not _that_ fussed *wink*

thanks boys

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

you must think alex, why? it has over heated in the first place ?

my bet is its not set up correctley on full boost! on WOT, which has caused it to go mega lean*frown*

it takes some to warp the manifold.*surprised*

this needs addressing or your gona be in the deepstuff again.

the above posts off the guys is spot on, *wink*
hope its not the turbo for you.

It overheated because the muppet i bought the car from had put silver heatwrap stuff tightly around the turbo and manifold, instead of around the things that should stay cool. - so it acted like an oven on a long drive (200+ miles) and cooked.
