hi guys,

right i have decided to throw caution to the wind and have a go at converting my car to turbo by my self.
i was origanaly getting a shop to do it but have decided there is no point in having the car if i know nothing about it so im going to have a crack myself.

now im no mechanic as it is but im quite confident if i put my mind to it i can do it.

so i need to do some learning and wonderd if you could help me out with some bits that im un-sure what they are.

1) is this the oil return hole ? and if it is what runs into this ?i.e where does the pipe originate from ?

2) is this threaded hole on the turbo the oil feed hole ? its located just behind the actuater arm.
and if so where will it feed from ?

2_b) on the same pic as no:2 there is another hole there with 2 threaded holes eitherside.
what is it for ?

3) what is this item in pic 3 ?

4) also i know that the intercooler pipe one end goes the the plenum chamber but where does the other end go ?#

Sorry for all the questions but i want to find out exactly what everything is and does and goes to etc before i take the plunge.

thanks.
jim...

1 is the oil return hole and is linked to the oil drain from the bottom of the turbo via a right angle silicone hose

2 is the oil feed to the turbo (middle of turbo) and the two bolt thing just to the right and down a bit in the pic is the outlet from the turbo and shouild go to the plenum or intercooler

3 is the plenum

intercooler fits between the plenum in pic 3 and the outlet from the turbo in pic 2

i hope you have more turbo parts than shown in the pictures. you also need the rest of the plenum, carb, inlet manifold, fuel pressure regulator etc etc etc

Thanks for the answers thats just what i was after.

Yes i do have plenty more parts than this its just these parts that i wasnt sure on little things i.e the oil feed etc.

Would this be the feed to the turbo then i take it ?

Thanks again.

what do i need to connect the intercooler hosing to the outlet on the turbo in pic 2 ?

as i cant find any part that would bolt onto the outlet to be able to connect the intercooler piping to with the stuff that i bought.

is there somwhere i can buy one from or will i need to try and fabricate somthing myself ?

cheers.

right...
i have changed the title of the topic as i thought instead of having another one i may aswell add onto this one to save space on the site..

so my next question for you is..
i have fitted my mpi tank in my mini today and was wondering how i will wire in the fuel pump ?
i have seen the post with the picture saying whats what on the tank but i cant find anywhere that specificaly tells you how to wire it in i.e does the live have to be from a specific point or is the switch live ok ? etc.
also is the black piping at the top of the tank a breather ?

cheers.
jim..

Basically - earth the 'earth' terminal
Take a wire off the Positive batt terminal and connect to the switched part of the relay via a fuse, Connect the other switched side of the relay to the connector on the tank. Earth one side of the relay coil, connect the other side of the relay coil to an inertia switch. Connect the other side of the inertia switch to a switch 12v output on the fuse box.

Job done!
A safe, fused fuel pump system. :)

well all is going well except i have come up with one problem..

where the gear box rod connects to the engine there is a small sleeve with what looks like 2 pins in it.

How do i get theese out ? as i cant seem to do it with a screwdriver and hammer to knock them out.
i have looked in the haynes and it says they are sleeve pins and to drift them out.

what the hell is drifting ?

Cheers.

you need a punch, basically a soild piece of metal thats just slightly smaller than the OD of the roll pin, i forget what size it is off the top of me head.

putting the car in reverse usually makes it easier to get at one of the pins, but all drifting is hitting with hammer and stick but with a posher name :)

As bud says you need a solid punch, a screwdriver will just dig into it and make it more difficult to remove most likely.
