Not sure that I would make another one out of stainless myself. Took too long to cut the flanges - it would be a lot quicker in mild steel.

That was one of the reasons I avoided stainless, its easier to work mild steel.. In that case maybe the best is to go with mild steel and TIG. If only someone would knock off a few sets of flanges and sell them to us...

Got the turbo mounted and finally was able to check the position, 5mm to spare --- bags of room. It could actually go a few mm nearer the block but too late now, maybe next version! Once it was in place I could start on the downpipe and it came out OK, the only problem is getting it in to position, with the flange and the bends its a bugger but can be done...eventually. I am using weld rings for the exhaust, these are a great help when fitting up as they make it real easy to align the pipes and once you start welding they give you something to weld into , keep the inside nice and smooth and should help with the sealing of the joint, well worth the few bucks they cost.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

looking good.

have you moved the engine forward at all (i.e. extended the engine steady?)

With my mirage setup i just managed to get away with the std engine position. a couple of mm to spare.

my turbo hit the block though, i had to grind the block and also smooth off the castings of the turbo to get it to fit nicely. plus the turbine would of hit the bulkhead without removing a small amount.

No Its a standard GT1548 with T25 inlet flange, I picked it up brand new last year for a good price (under $500)

Yes, Its maybe 1/2" forward... If I was to snug the turbo up to the block it may have just fitted but the extra always comes in useful.

Robert, with regard to the weld rings I've not found them for sale from any of the usual suspects in the UK so if you find some let me know.

In the past I have used the jubile type exhaust pipe repair pieces with slots cut in to align tubing for but welding ... just an idea.

Terry .... my mistake .... looking at it now what I thought was an actuator is the outlet from the compressor .. Doh .... my eyes aren't used to being sober this weekend .. much easier to see now I've had a couple .... lol

Finally finished off all the little bits, actuator bracket, piping and all. Final check of the megajolt timing, its at 14 degrees but that can wait so turn the key... Started first time!! Wohoo ...sounds great, no obvious exhaust leaks, lambda showing around 14, bags of oil pressure. cranked it up to 2500 rpm for 15 mins to bed the cam and I call my mate to let him listen to it on the phone.

As I am chatting I noticed the flames licking the windscreen...SHIT.. I cut the engine, grabbed the extinguisher and blow at the flames cos I'm fumbling with the catch , theres oil everywhere even the pool on the floor is on fire..

After the fire was out I started feeling a bit sick, gotta be the damn drain hose... no its clean ---then oil supply line...no WTF?? 30 mins later I'm laying on the floor with the hot oil gently dripping on my head thinking "if this turbo has blown then F it I'm going to N/A" but even after 10 mins of peering around I still cant work out where its coming from, I spun the engine, oil pissing out from somewhere back there and no oil pressure.. then I saw it....

Plastic oil pressure gauge line laying on the turbo downpipe.. Boy am I relieved!! No real damage just a nasty smell to amuse my wife

Install looks really neat and tidy. *smiley*

Are you going to heat proof the bulkhead ?

I do have some sheets of heat shield and I may also wrap the manifold but was waiting for a while, we'll see... I want to see how this manifold holds up first.

Surprisingly it did, the main fire was on the downpipe so the flames just went up around the carb and melted the accelerator and choke cables a little bit, I checked under the scuttle fearing the worrst and nothing..,as you say Lucky man!!

Well I drove it tonight... what a blast!! the local boyz dont know what the hell to make of the whining sounds, its great and I am already hooked on the boost... but lots of setting up to do now, its still pretty rich which is good cos its safe.. Only worry is that the water temp climbing when I am sitting at a light for a few mins, Rads not overflowing and I dont even know how accurate the gauge is yet..

Hi,
I've noticed that if you've been booting it about and then stop at lights, the temps do shoot up, then drop down again when you've driven a bit more. Electric fan in the inner wing should do the trick.

Gavin :)

Ha--Deamon tweaks.. Thanks Stevie..

On the cooling its pretty cool here.. only in the low 80's it will go high 90's in the next month or so!! I'm still not convinced its actually overheating, its just an old smith gauge and I'm not sure I even have the correct sender.. I need to confirm that first

I added a pint or so of coolant as I had forgotton to check this with all the excitement of the fire, I have a thermostat installed so next is to fit a blank. and I have the turbo water draining into the bottom hose, so will also have that going to the top hose.

If all that fails I'll get a fan!

why would you blank the thermostat? its there for a reason, just get the 74deg one.

you say your turbo water return goes to the bottom hose (correct plumbing) but will change to the top hose (incorrect plumbing)

the water pump sucks on the bottom hose and blows water through the block and out the heater tap and thermostat. if you go from heater tap to thermostat you wont get proper flow in my mind.

Hi,
I think moving the turbo water pipe should solve your problem, you could always run that pipe through a heater matrix under the bonnet if you've got the room.
Shed .. It should go into the top hose so that it's not pushing hot water from the turbo back into the "cooler" side of the engine.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Bat. nice idea but your trying to make water flow into the outlet.

your idea is good. cool the water from the turbo by putting it in the top hose then through the rad before going into the engine.

i assume this is a metro engine so no bypass hose, so, when the thermostat is shut the water comes out the heater tap and back into the bottom hose. if you do as you say then the engine will never worm up in cold weather and the water through the turbo will have a reduced flow rate due to the pressure drop across the radiator.

another option is to go from the heater tap to the turbo then the heater and back into the bottom hose. but there is still a problem. the extra restriction of the heater/turbo will reduce flow rate.

i had restricted flow through the turbo and distroyed 2 turbos till i found out why
