From what I can tell for use with a TIG pure argon can be used to shield with mild, ally, or stainless.
There are other gases available that are tailored and specific to each material, but pure Ar will do the job acceptably for all 3.
I'm trying to source some Argon at the moment for when I do buy a TIG.

What Tom said,

I have a (miller?) hand book somewhere in pdf form it has some good info on that sort of thing, i'll dig it out end email it later.

I'd like to give helium a try at some point, IIRC it give better penatration due to the arc voltage increasing.

Just attached the hand book thingy.

Hi Tom,
I would be a bit suspicious of a machine at that price. I read a bit about it at www.mig-welding.co.uk, the guys on their forum are really good and mostly pro welders. The general feeling I got was to go for a second hand big name machine, ie miller, migtronic or murex rather than the cheaper brands as it will last longer and parts will be readily available.
Hope that helps
Sam

I did read up some reviews but they are vastly different, some people say steer clear, others say they are excellent machines for the money. I've been watching TIGs and they just don't come up s/h in single phase, so really my options are a new top brand machine at £1500 (which isn't an option for the bits of fucking about I want to be able to do) or a s/h shitbox dc machine at £150, or one of these foreign ac/dc ones for £400 ish.
Its not as if I'm going to be doing loads with it, and I think a couple of people on here (mini13 and Paul S) have had reasonable results with the foreign machines.

I went to our local welding shop for some gas the other week.

Sat on the floor was a Butters welder. It was exactly the same as my Mitech but it was three times the price.

Now Butters are supposed to be a big name in UK welders, but they obviously get there machines built in the same factory in China as Mitech.

You get the comfort of UK support, but is it worth £1000?

A lot of the people on the mig-welding forum who are dead against the Chinese machines.....are the people selling welders.

Im sure a lot of their opinion does have some merit. But on the other hand, Im sure they also dont like to see such cheap competition.

I chickened out and bought an R-Tech which claimed British only to discover recently its Chinese anyway.

I would agree with that.

Don't forget to budget about £250 for a BOC contract, a bottle of gas, regulator and some welding rods. Bit of a sting in the tale if you are not ready for it!

I bought the cheaper version Tom and its not bad for the cash tbh. Theres better but you pays your money......
The pro welders at work could not fault it for less than£200 anyway!

cheers James

Tom I think you may find that a number of the top three phase machines will also run single phase but the sellers on ebay may not necesarily know that. I think I looked at a migatronic one which was advertised as three phase but actually worked on both. Just a thought

Jim welding mild steel with pure argon is a bitch. I picked a small argon cylinder up by accident rather than the mix and I thought my mig was knackered, it seemed to burn much hotter and I seemed to blow holes in the steel. Also the welds were really pitted.
Moral of the story, use co2 and argon mix. I am now renting a BOC argoshield light bottle and it is much better.

Argon's used for stainless steel, not sure about mild steel though, no reason why not, it's still a shielding gas - give it a go.

From my apprentice days, I can recall that its not advisable to use 100 % CO2 for mild steel (car bodywork etc) as the gas is too cold for the weld pool. When we did use it, it caused panel distortion (particularly when doing rear panel repairs). It also causes water vapour to condense on the weld surface as the weld cools giving rise to rusting if precautions aren't taken.

I use Argoshield Light which I think is CO2 with 15% argon, or the other way around.

Not sure whether neat Argon would be any cheaper than Argoshield Light which I use for ordinary carbon steel.

I only keep a small white bottle of Argon for small Ali and Stainless jobs (its great for this with a Mig) then switch over to use the Argo Light for all else.

Doesn't help Tom with his Tig though ! Sorry mate.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Well I've bitten the bullet and bought one.....

£385 plus £15 post which I was happy with, I did some research of previous sales and emailed a couple of people who'd bought them, all seemed reasonably happy with them, and the cheapest one I saw sell was £370, so I've certainly not paid over the odds, the dearest one went for over £600!

I'll keep you informed how I get on with it when it arrives.....

You'll love glueing bits of ally together!

do yourself a favor and get yourself a nea pair of tig gloves and some stainles wire brushes. *wink*

Oh also a bottle flow meter is pretty much an essential.
