so bought myself a gearbox and vernier timing gear set this evening.
Box has only done a few thousand miles since rebuilt so i'm hoping it's good. Has a cross pin diff, competition bulk rings and a central pickup in it. I'll be removing the final drive to replace with my 2.95 MPi one. Whilst the diff is out, is there an easy way to identify the manufacturer (i only want to use a minispares one based on feedback of other brands on here).

If you put up a picture of the diff i'm sure someone will be able to help identify it. From what I can see in the first picture it doesn't look like the minispares one I have.

So I will be amalgamating the two gearboxes i have to make a good setup. Just after some opinions on the ratios to use...

So bearing in mind that I will be using this car daily and mainly driving on country roads at 50 or 60 mph. I have available to me a standard A+ gear-set or a Metro HLE gear-set. Also standard drops or economy drops (also i understand i can mix and match std and eco). And finally a 3.44 FD or a 2.76 FD. I've been playing with the guessworks calc. Reading other's comments many people seem happy with ST ratios and a 3.2 FD (in green) but perhaps complain of the long 1st.
SO (in white) with eco drops, HLE ratios and the 2.76 FD I have a comparable setup but with and easier first (and my car may be a bit heavier due to daily drive comforts) so should be good.

Opinions please...

ALso, with my engine setup I'm hoping for usable torque between 2500 and 5500 rpm so 1st 2nd 3rd should be a nice transition.

It's been a while since the last update but much has happened...

I'd collected some important parts... dump valve, audi intercooler and changing to a front mount rad, the plan is to put the intercooler down where the side mount rad would have been. I'll use some thin aluminium sheet to create a duct to channel the air past the rad. Also the side electric fan can be linked to the inlet air temp to come on if it gets too hot.

Been busy and built the Megasquirt 3X ECU

Also added a touch screen to my eeePC to make tuning easier and with the intention of fitting it in the dash later on

Parts bought and made ready to weld up for the exhuast

and the inlet (just need some runners bending to shape)

Oil drain point was drilled into the back of the box as discussed earlier
(MPi block so don't have the option of the mechanical fuel pump hole)

Gearbox rebuilt with Metro HLE gears, economy drops, 2.95 FD and minispares cross pin diff

Got a small hint that the project may be taking me too long, as I found this in with all the engine parts...

I then moved onto rebuilding the block. WIth balanced and lightened running gear.

Fitted some shinny new lightened followers

Received the head back from the machine shop with larger 35.7mm inlet valves and 29.5mm exhaust valves, manganese bronze guides, matched chambers and ports.

standard MPi cam timed in with the vernier pulley

and finally the assembled unit

The calculated compression ratio has turned out as 9.43:1 So this should still give good thermal efficiency but also leaves me with a bit more headroom than planned to run more boost (which i expect i'd have wanted anyway) :)

Engine is now in the car, wiring for the Megasquirt is all in place and tuning has started. I'll post tuning related information in my MS3X MPi Trials thread... http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=528171 and keep build stuffs here.

New disks and green stuff pads

Engine getting built around in car

Exhaust butchered (i mean modified) to give second lambda sensor

Tuning will continue and hopefully MOT next week. The plan is to then run it N/A get used to the Megsaquirt and get a good tune before swapping for my turbo manifolds and the GT15. Watch this space.
