I'm investing in a new set of shock absorbers.

I can afford up to about £40 a shock and it appears that the options are Spax or Koni adjustables.

I'd be interested in your opinions of either and any other makes.

Just fast road use, nothing fancy.

Konis aren't really adjustables in the commonly used sense, as in there isn't a knob to adjust its stiffness. All the adjustment is to allow compensation for wear.

Spax or GAZ are a good adjustable shock, and the KYBs are great value and ideal for road use.

gaz, bilstein and spax are all good, tbh, i cant tell the difference once they were on, guess gaz would be the best as there lightest and apparently rebuildable...?

I have found in the past they all do the job. A comment I would have is that Spax tend to be on the harder side of things, whereas Konis tend to be softer. This is from experience on both Minis and other cars as well.

Thanks for your help.

Having done a bit more research, I've decided to go for the KYB Gas-A-Just. They have recieved a lot of positive reviews.

It also saves me £50 and that can go towards the turbo project.

Following a search I've dug this up..

So, as this is some years ago is the KYB Shock still the one to go for, for a road and occasional track car? Or is there a better option now?

Last mini has gaz adjustibles and was still very harsh on on the road at the softest setting..

Cheers

I've just replaced my rubber donuts after first thinking it was the shocks at fault. It has made the world of difference. Such a good ride now. Bought the minispares standard donuts. The best £180 i've spent on the mini.

Umm I never thought of that - you make a good point! been looking at protech but wasn't sure on ride quality, don't want it too harsh on the road.

They're adjustable, so you can make them ride as you need. Never heard bad things about them.

Protec is the same guy who was spax, then GAZ. A decent choice.

i'm running Gaz shocks with no issues on old dounuts.

Just ordered some RED dot donuts for the turbo.

Yeah but I thought the Gaz shocks were too harsh for road use so want something softer.. Mind you the last mini did have a weld in cage that stiffened things up considerably.

Think I will try the protechs

Got a welded in 6 point cage, Gaz shocks and red dot cones this time.
Maybe a little harsh but not built for comfort *Clapping*
