Ok, I have just done this to my subframe, and after lots of searching for pics and info i have started this page for all to add your pics and info too so its all in one place .

Right then what have I learnt the hard way? With the holesaws, go slow and lots of lube *happy* (I was using eng oil) if not you will make lots of smoke and the holesaw will be good for the bin. I found a big drill (1050watt) had the best torque to go slow enough as I burnt out 2 smaller watt drills.

I also enlarged the driveshaft holes so you can get the pot joints through all made up.

After looking about on here, I will be doing this to my one when it's all seam welded up http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.p...id=174403&fr=25

Then the world is your oyster go mad !

My frame started of as 16kg now its down to 14.3kg

The pages I found good reading are.

hope this helps simon

Sorry to dig this one up, but there is already half a dozen or more of these threads.

I just wanted to know if there was any do's and don'ts to lightening front subframes.

I'm also doing the mod to enlarge the hole for the drive shaft pot joints, anyone have any advice on the best way to do this?

To enlarge thw holes just cut them bigger then weld the two skins together arround the shaft holes

Dont.drill holes too big on the front section, i never drill through double skin bits, start small then go bigger, measure it all to be semetrical, add some bracing, remember not to drill through the front gearbox steady and have fun doing it.

But the main one seam weld the subby.

this is my attempt i havent weighed it yet because i still have alot moore to do just havent had time to do anything for the past year

I've been afflicted too.

My advice would be less holes rather than more unless it's a full race car.

And totally agree on hole spacings. It really looks crap if they are not even.

I went this far, then gave up after wrecking the small hole saw. Bugger breaking out the small drill bits like some of you have!

This is one of my Auto-testing subframes from the std 16kg to just under 12kg and last longer on a back to back test with a standard item in the same car.
